With so many of us making our own greeting cards for the holidays, you may have realized that coming up with cool Christmas card greetings is not as easy as you might first think. Ah-ha! That’s why the card companies pay people to do it! If you’re making your own cards this year, take a few minutes to consider some Christmas card greetings that will keep you from getting a lump of coal in your stocking.

Adapt a joke – Humorous cards are top sellers in virtually every category. Everyone loves to laugh at the holidays, so adapt a joke. Take, for example, this one. “What does Santa experience if he gets stuck in the chimney? Claustrophobia!”

Add a clipart picture to those silly lines and you’re on your way. Look for Christmas jokes at places such as Funny-Christmas.com. Puns work the same way. Find some at Joke Christmas.

Use your brain! – Show off your multi-lingual capabilities (or your ability to copy from the web) by sending Christmas card greetings with a global greeting. To find out how ‘Merry Christmas’ is said around the world, look at Santa’s Net. Use your favorite three to five versions on the inside of a greeting card for a foreign flair!

The reason for the season – The story of the nativity is told in the Gospels in the Bible. Look in Matthew 1:18-25, Luke 2:1-39, John 1:9 and 14. Pick a verse or a portion of a verse and use it inside your card.

Finally, consider the loves and passions of the card recipient. Are they a cat-lover? Wish them a ‘Meow-y Christmas’. A teacher? Remind her that the Christmas alphabet has no L.

Whatever you do, keep it short and to the point. No one wants to take 29 minutes out of a busy holiday schedule to read a lengthy card. Christmas card greetings are a like Santa – they make only a short appearance each year. Make yours count!
